ROSEMARY OIL FOR HAIR

TikTok trends come and go, but the buzz around rosemary oil for hair isn’t going anywhere. This essential oil has been going viral on social media for several years now, with fans claiming it’s a haircare superhero. We’ve been making rosemary shampoo since the 1970s, so we’re no strangers to this herbal haircare ingredient. Keep reading to find out what all the hype's about...

ROSEMARY ESSENTIAL OIL

Rosemary essential oil comes from the rosemary shrub, an evergreen, bee-friendly plant that’s native to the Mediterranean and commonly found in herb gardens here in the UK. The oil is a clear liquid that’s usually steam-distilled from the leaves and stems of the plant. It has a fresh, woody aroma that’s known to be clarifying and invigorating.

ROSEMARY OIL FOR HAIR GROWTH?

Does rosemary oil help hair growth? One of the reasons for all the rosemary oil hype is that some users believe it increases and accelerates the growth of hair. Sadly, it probably won't give you a magnificent mane overnight, but it may help your hair look and feel healthier.

More scientific research is needed to determine whether claims rosemary oil helps hair grow is true. Although it won't fast-forward the growing process of your locks, it is beneficial to the scalp, which can help promote healthier, stronger locks. So, hair might look thicker and glossier and need cutting less often  – which could make it seem like it's getting longer fast.

IS ROSEMARY OIL GOOD FOR HAIR?

Yep! Rosemary oil is good for hair. Well, technically, it’s good for the scalp – but healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Keep reading to find out more about the benefits of rosemary oil for hair.

WHAT DOES ROSEMARY OIL DO FOR YOUR HAIR?

Rosemary oil is packed with benefits for the scalp and hair follicles. Whereas other popular hair oils, such as argan oil and jojoba oil, moisturise the lengths of tresses, rosemary helps hair at the root. It is known to stimulate hair follicles and help maintain a healthy balance on the scalp, which can lead to healthier, stronger and shinier-looking locks.

ROSEMARY OIL FOR SCALP

Rosemary oil is famed for being something of a scalp saviour. Here’s why…

It’s stimulating – Rosemary oil is known to help stimulate blood flow to the scalp, providing vital nutrients to hair follicles. This can help create the optimum conditions for healthy hair.

It’s soothing – The oil has anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antimicrobial properties. Together, these ‘antis’ may help soothe a dry scalp reduce flakiness (always do a patch test and never apply to sore or irritated skin).

It’s balancing – Rosemary oil is known to contribute to a healthy balance in the scalp microbiome, helping to form the foundations for strong hair.  It is also known to help remove build-up and regulate sebum production, which could be good news for oily hair.

HOW TO USE ROSEMARY OIL FOR HAIR

Rosemary oil should never be applied directly to the scalp because it’s highly concentrated and can cause irritation – experts recommend diluting it with a carrier oil. There are plenty of recipes of this online, but you can also buy premixed rosemary oil products. It is recommended to massage diluted rosemary oil into your scalp and leave it for up to four hours, before washing out. Hair oiling can be messy and time-consuming though; one of the easiest ways to incorporate rosemary oil into your hair routine is to use rosemary shampoo and conditioner
