NATURAL CLEANING HACKS

Nothing beats the feeling of a freshly cleaned home, but cleaning products can be harsh on the planet and us. Thankfully, Nature can help. Some of the most effective ingredients for washing our hair and skin come from the natural world, and so too do those that can help clean our homes. Chances are you already have some of these household heroes waiting in your kitchen cupboards, so get ready to treat your house to a refresh with Nature on your side.

IMPORTANT: SOME HOUSEKEEPING!

These hacks are not suitable for all surfaces. Always test a new cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area before you begin using it. Very acidic substances such as citrus fruits and vinegar should never be used on natural stone or wood surfaces because they can damage and degrade them.

CLEAN AND POLISH WITH COCONUT OIL

Pot of coconut oil

The benefits of coconut oil for hair and skin are many (which is why we use it in so many of our products!) – but it’s also an allrounder when it comes to cleaning the home. This tropical oil is high in lauric acid, which has microbial properties – meaning it may help keep bacteria, fungus and viruses at bay.

Use coconut oil to polish solid wooden furniture and stainless steel appliances, tackle scuff marks on floors and remove chewing gum or sticky residue. Pop about half a teaspoon of the oil on a rag (old t-shirts ripped into strips make great, waste-free rags) and rub it gently into the surface. If polishing wood, leave the oil to soak in for around 20 minutes. Wipe away any excess oil with a clean rag.

WHITE VINEGAR FOR CLEANING

Versatile white vinegar is an essential in any greener cleaning kit. This non-toxic, biodegradable multi-tasker can be used to make your home sparkle in myriad ways. Its natural acidity means it’s highly effective at removing grease and grime from a whole host of surfaces, including mirrors, windows, tiles, grouting and appliances. Never use white vinegar to clean stone, granite or marble surfaces – it can seriously damage them.

Many natural cleaning tips recommend mixing equal parts white vinegar and water. Spray this mix on glass surfaces like mirrors and windows and buff with newspaper for a streak and lint-free finish. To remove limescale from stainless steel taps, soak a rag in the water-vinegar solution and use it to scrub the taps until they sparkle.

SPRUCE UP WITH CITRUS FRUITS

The citric acid in fruits like grapefruit and lemon makes them a tough match for grease and grime. Plus, their uplifting, zesty scents are perfect for refreshing your home and leaving it smelling great.

Get rid of grease on pots, pans and hobs with salt and a grapefruit or lemon. Slice the fruit in half and sprinkle salt on the inside. Grab the fruit half, salted side down, and rub it into the affected area. Rinse away any leftover pulp and salt and polish with a rag.

BICARBONATE OF SODA FOR CLEANING

One of the most popular (and cheap) natural cleaning solutions is baking soda. Also known as bicarbonate of soda, this powerful powder is naturally alkaline and abrasive. It’s renowned for leaving baths, sinks and stainless steel taps shining and its ability to help neutralise unpleasant odours.

Leave a small pot of baking soda inside your fridge or shake the powder into the bottom of a kitchen bin to help keep strong smells at bay. You can even use baking soda to freshen up a dog or cat bed: just sprinkle it on the surface, wait 15 minutes and vacuum away. Voila! That clean sheets feeling, for your pet.
